Under the direction of the Headquarters (HQ) Police Manager, this position is responsible for ensuring the safety of Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) employees and the public, government officials and dignitaries visiting the TPWD Headquarters.  Monitors and authorizes entrance and departures of employees and visitors, to include deliveries.  Patrols buildings and grounds to maintain safety and security. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.



Graduation from High School or GED.

  • Experience:

Four years experience in law enforcement or security work.

  • Licensure:

Must possess or obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class “C” Texas driver’s license.

  • NOTE:  Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

    Physical Requirements:

Applicants must be (a) of good mental and physical health, a test by a physician will be administered; (b) Federal law requires that new employees present original documents that establish identity and US employment eligibility; (c) of high moral character and hold no felony convictions, no DWI, BWI, DUID or class A misdemeanor convictions within the past five years, no Class B misdemeanor convictions within the past two years- a background check will be completed; (d) the recipient of an honorable discharge from the military service, if applicable; (e) Twenty-one years of age older.

  • NOTE:  A background check will be done prior to final employment approval.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

  • Experience:

Experience as a licensed peace officer or security officer.

Experience with customer service work.


Knowledge of Texas Criminal Laws, the Code of Criminal Procedures and the Penal Code;

Knowledge of emergency reporting procedures and traffic and parking regulations;

Skill in monitoring and assessing situations, determining appropriate response, using emergency law enforcement equipment;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in effective interaction with staff at all levels of the department and other State agencies and organizations;

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

Ability to enforce security rules and regulations;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program;

Ability to assess situations and determine appropriate response;

Ability to conduct investigations;

Ability to under stressful situations;

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

Ability to work as a member of a team;

Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.


Required to work 10-40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Required to work overtime as necessary;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays;

Required to operate a State vehicle;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
