Duties & Responsibilities
The Sr. Linux Systems Administrator is responsible for the configuration and management of Linux servers hosting enterprise applications and websites. The administrator works closely with the Associate Director and other systems administrators to ensure daily operational efficiencies in the School’s datacenter. Consults with HSGE research centers to assess infrastructure requirements and build and maintain systems supporting their research.

• Configure and administer Linux (Oracle and SUSE) systems in a virtualized environment (VMWare 6.5)
• Ensure the security and reliability of systems and applications with timely monitoring, patching and vulnerability remediation.
• Ensure the integrity of backups; conduct performance tuning; upgrade applications as required
• Consult with vendor technical support to troubleshoot and resolve issues
• Ensure standardized processes and procedures are documented and followed to maintain integrity of systems and consistency of service
• Create and maintain configuration management playbooks (Ansible)
• Build, configure and manage full LAMP stack
• Manage MySQL and Postgres databases. Perform and test upgrades, maintain backup schedules, troubleshoot and resolve issues
• Support and maintain the version control system (GIT)
• Collaborate with the Associate Director and other administrators on the maintenance and management of the datacenter network, including firewall, VLANs, VMware infrastructure, and storage network
• Participates in the evaluation, testing and implementation of new technology platforms
• Participate in cross-functional initiatives impacting GSE’s network infrastructure; troubleshoot network connectivity issues, work with HUIT NOC on problem resolution and integration issues
• Regular on-call rotation and occasional off-hours work required

Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar discipline
• Five years of experience administering, securing and tuning enterprise Linux systems
• Five years of experience with LAMP stack build and administration, including compiling Apache and managing MySQL databases
• Direct experience with Bash scripting, as well as one of the following: PHP, Perl or Python
• Direct experience with networking protocols, physical & virtual switching, vSAN and firewall technologies
• Direct experience with monitoring and logging tools, such as Zabbix and Splunk
• Experience using configuration management tools
• Direct experience working with and supporting VMware 5.x or 6.x environments
• Direct experience conducting vulnerability scans and coordinating remediation efforts

Additional Qualifications
• Hands on experience with Cisco IOS or Junos OS
• Experience with Dell/EMC appliances (IDPA, VxRails)
• Experience managing enterprise Drupal websites
• Prior experience in an academic or research computing environment
• Strong customer service orientation
• Ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously and independently
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
• Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
• Proven track record of completing projects on deadline
